What was your first reaction when you found out you got accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)?

I was shocked to say the least. I was actually called by them before I received my email. While I was happy and excited for this new journey, I was also at a personal emphasis given that I realized that I have to leave my family.

What do you plan to study at SCAD, and what excites you most about it?

I plan to study Fashion Merchandising and Graphic Design. What excites me most about fashion Merchandising is that I’ll have a first hand experience with fashion, which has been a big part of my personality and self. I’m most excited with graphic design because of my huge passion for art and I can’t wait to create pieces i know others will appreciate as much as me.

What activities or experiences do you think helped your application stand out?

I believe that being part of ignite helped me because it helped to showcase my abilities in making connections and ensuring people feel welcome. I also believe that indulging in the different art projects around school and in class has helped me stand out artistically.

What role did River City Science Academy play in shaping your academic journey?

By helping me to raise my GPA with the numerous options of AP courses, RCSA helped me to give myself a higher advantage in advancing academically and cognitively. Also, with the various helpful counselors, I was able to get organized with my academics and other priorities. Further, I feel RCSA helped me to be able to function with different levels of workload from different teachers, helping later on in college.

How would you describe the learning environment at River City Science Academy?

I would describe the learning environment as competitive in a good way. The competition of trying to be the best pushes everyone into a friendly competition of trying to excel. This environment not only helped with getting work done but also earning a bit of reward in earning the spot given.

Were there any teachers or mentors who had a big impact on you?

Yes, Mr. Crotty is one teacher who had a large impact on me. In having him in 2 classes as my teacher, I’ve learned not only how real pressure is applied in the academic life, but also how that pressure can shape you into a better person altogether. Another teacher who had a large impact on me was Mr. Plummer. He taught me how many things we feel we don’t need to learn can be applied to real life.

What advice would you give to students dreaming of competitive universities?

I would give the advice of taking the risk and applying no matter what. Despite what many think, just because there’s a small acceptance rate doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it. I would also suggest not only focusing on grades, but also things that help you to stand out from others.

How do you hope to make a difference in the world through your education?

I hope to showcase how anyone can make it into any field they desire as long as they truly put in the work. I hope to showcase that no matter your background, your dreams are more than that and that when one chases those dreams, they can become greater than any struggle they face.
