🎓 Princeton-Bound: Celebrating Seila’s Extraordinary Achievement

We are thrilled to announce that Seila Avdic, a senior at River City Science Academy Middle-High, has been accepted to Princeton University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world.

Seila’s high school journey has been nothing short of exceptional. She successfully completed 15 dual enrollment and 9 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, earning a weighted GPA of 4.85 by the time she received her acceptance letter. Her relentless pursuit of academic excellence, deep involvement in extracurriculars, and strong sense of purpose have made her a standout student and a role model for others at RCSA.

With Seila’s acceptance, River City Science Academy proudly celebrates its 6th student admitted to Princeton University a remarkable milestone that reflects both student dedication and a strong college-going culture.

We sat down with Seila for a short interview to hear more about her journey, plans, and reflections:

What was your first reaction when you found out you got accepted to Princeton University?

Opening my decision, I was ready to see a rejection because I never expected to get into Princeton. I couldn’t believe that it was real, so I immediately screamed then called my closest friends to make them read it and confirm what it said, and we all cried. I also talked to my previous Science Olympiad team members who are now studying at Princeton University; they all welcomed and congratulated me right away.

What do you plan to study at Princeton, and what excites you most about it?

I plan to study Molecular Biology at Princeton, possibly with a minor in Quantitative and Computational Biology. I’m excited about the possibilities of bettering human health through understanding molecular components. I’m especially interested in microbiology and how the world of bacteria and viruses can make a difference for humans.

What activities or experiences do you think helped your application stand out?

Science Olympiad was my top activity, as I have been committed for the past 6 years. Some other activities that took place at RCSA were helping run RCSA Future Health Professionals/HOSA, conducting my own study through AP Research, being a part of Mental Health club, and competing in Turkish Olympiad. Outside of school, I volunteered with Engin Program and did summer activities such as a local lab internship and a UF summer program. Overall, I think I was able to be seen as a well-rounded applicant.

What role did River City Science Academy play in shaping your academic journey?

River City Science Academy helped to shape my academic journey by providing me a close-knit community of teachers and peers that motivated me, as well as providing me with countless opportunities I was grateful for. I was able to find my passions and do activities that showed that, so I don’t think I would have achieved this if I didn’t go to RCSA.

How would you describe the learning environment at River City Science Academy?

RCSA has created an open learning environment, giving me the ability to learn about and do projects on things that I was interested in. At the same time, I would describe the environment as rigorous and competitive, as each of my teachers has pushed me to do my best.

Were there any teachers or mentors who had a big impact on you?

I am very grateful for the support of my closest teachers. From my CMP mentor, Mrs. Durmus, to my Science Olympiad coaches, Mr. Dastan, Mrs. Uysal, and Ms. Taylor, they have all become like a second family to me throughout our countless trips and memories together. In the classroom, Ms. Sloan and Mrs. Bektas are two teachers that have always been there for me. I specifically thank Ms. Sloan for her help in AP Research and Mrs. Bektas for helping me in Turkish Olympiad.

What advice would you give to students dreaming of top universities?

I would recommend students who are dreaming of top universities to do activities that reflect your character and your passions. Colleges want to see who you are as a person outside of your test scores and grades, so do your best to reflect that where you can, in your writing supplementals and activity sections.

How do you hope to make a difference in the world through your education?

I hope to work as a scientist in medical research with my study of biology. I want to work in a lab on the frontlines of discovery for various medicine, vaccines, and cures. I hope that one day, to any amount, my work will be able to help somebody.
