Reflecting on Black History Month

RCSA is a community with a diverse population, and we have always placed an emphasis on learning about and appreciating different cultures while simultaneously promoting our own school-wide culture. Black History Month, which occurs every February, was the perfect opportunity to do just that. We are so proud of our students for taking initiative to work on activities related to Black History all month long this year. Keep reading to learn a little bit about what Black History Month looked like here at RCSA!

One of the most exciting activities our students participated in was creating Black History Month research posters. Some of the most influential people of this country, such as President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Rosa Parks, were discussed, and many students learned new things about them! Check out Mrs. Ryabov’s third grade class’s Black History Month research posters over at RCSA Mandarin!

Additionally, students received the extraordinary opportunity to hear firsthand about what this month means to some important figures in Jacksonville and surrounding areas! Guest speakers included Andi Williams, the Director of Community Relations for Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp; CEO of the Clara White Mission and Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman; Chief Deloris O’Neal, the first Black female JSO Police Chief; Councilman Terrance Freeman; the Honorable Rhonda Peoples Waters, who was the first Black woman to be elected as a Duval County Judge; Jason Hardwick, UF Health Director of Operations; JSO Officer Lakesha Burton; Kortney Wesley, Assistant to Congressman Al Lawson; State Representative Angie Nixon; and Tony Davis, UF Health Director of Security.

February was an educational month we will never forget! We thank our students for their continued willingness to learn, our parents and teachers for leading by example every single day, and our community leaders for taking the time to visit all four of our campuses and talking to students about some very important topics!
