Read Across America Day is a celebration created by the National Education Association to honor Dr. Seuss’s Birthday and recognize the importance of reading. It is celebrated on the closest school day to March 2nd, Dr. Seuss’s Birthday. Many of our local schools and organizations celebrated the day.
RCSA wanted to bring in as many guest readers as they could from the Jacksonville community to read a book with their elementary school students and share their love of reading. They were able to welcome a total of 39 guest readers during the week of March 2nd – March 6th. Guests consisted of city council members, tv news anchors and reporters, JSO officers, Icemen players, DCPS board members, and more. The students loved celebrating throughout the whole week.
“It is so exciting for our students to see people that they may recognize in the community or from the news taking time out of their day to read to them.”, says Sel Buyuksarac, Chief of Public Affairs at the school. “It not only makes them feel important but also helps them see the importance of reading. Our community leaders love visiting and reading to these classes and we are so thankful to have such amazing support in this city.”
